Ford Focus radio code

Changed the battery in your Ford Focus and the stereo now shows CODE or four dashes? Every Focus Mk1 and Mk2 radio is protected by a four-digit anti-theft code tied to its serial number. Read the serial off the display, type it into the generator above and you'll have the original code in seconds – free, and with no need to book the car into a Ford dealer.

How to get your Ford Focus radio code in 3 steps

  1. Display the serial number. Switch the radio on and press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 together (older M-series units: 2 and 6) until a serial such as V123456 or M123456 appears. No luck? The serial is also printed on the label on the radio casing.
  2. Enter the serial in the generator above. The original factory code for your radio is calculated instantly and shown on screen. The service is free; a small donation lets you skip the short wait timer.
  3. Enter the code on the radio. With CODE or four dashes on the display, press preset 1 repeatedly for the first digit, 2 for the second, 3 for the third and 4 for the fourth, then press and hold 5 until the radio beeps and plays.

Which radios are fitted to the Ford Focus?

Focus Mk1 (1998–2004) came with the Ford 4000 RDS, 5000 RDS, 4500 RDS-EON or the first 6000 CD – M-series serials, displayed by holding 2 and 6 (try 1 and 6 on the 6000 CD). Focus Mk2 and Mk2.5 (2004–2011) use the later 6000 CD, the Sony CD/MP3 or Sony DAB head unit – V-series serials, displayed by holding 1 and 6. From the Focus Mk3 onward most cars have a SYNC unit with no radio code; if yours still shows a V serial, it works here too.

Serial number does not start with M or V?

Then your radio uses a different security system and this generator cannot calculate its code. Fords with a SYNC touchscreen (roughly 2015 onward) do not use a radio code at all: the unit is paired to the car and unlocks by itself after a battery change.

Ford Focus radio code: frequently asked questions

Which Ford Focus radios can be unlocked with this generator?
Any Focus radio whose serial number starts with M or V followed by six digits: the 4000 RDS, 5000 RDS and 4500 RDS-EON of the Mk1, and the 6000 CD, Sony CD and Sony DAB units of the Mk1 and Mk2. Focus models with a SYNC touchscreen do not use a code.
How do I enter the code on a Ford Focus 6000 CD?
With CODE showing, press preset 1 repeatedly until the first digit is right, then 2 for the second, 3 for the third and 4 for the fourth. When all four digits match your code, press and hold preset 5 until the radio beeps and starts playing. You usually get three attempts before it shows WAIT.
Why does my Ford Focus ask for a radio code after a battery change?
It's the built-in anti-theft protection: whenever the radio loses power it assumes it may have been stolen and locks until the correct code is entered. Once you have the code from this page, write it in the service book or on a sticker inside the glovebox so the next battery swap is painless.
